About Us
The Maple Valley Astronomical Society is a group of local residents who share an interest in astronomy. Anyone is welcome to join (even if you're from Black Diamond), all we ask is that you bring your passion for astronomy ...no telescope required! Most people join to learn more about the night sky, so don't be embarrassed if you don't know Polaris from Pollux, your enthusiasm is what matters.

Our mission includes several optional objectives, each intended to inspire members in a way that is personally challenging and rewarding. Not all people enjoy astronomy in the same way, so if the suggestions described below don't align with your astronomical passion join us anyway and inspire us with your way of thinking.

Here's the current list of ideas:

  • Create an open, welcoming club of local residents who cultivate and share in the study of astronomy among members and our community.
  • Promote astronomy in our schools.
  • Loan telescopes to students and club members.
  • Participate in or organize star parties.
  • Organize public viewing sessions.
  • Share astrophotography with members and with our community via this Web site.
  • Contribute to scientific research.
  • Invite professional astronomers to lecture on current discoveries and research.
  • Create software or refine techniques for tracking NEOs and comets, maybe even discover something!
  • Enjoy the night sky.

Astronomy is also a great way to show your kids learning is a rewarding, life-long journey that shouldn't end when the school day is over or once a degree is hanging on your wall. Join us today and see something amazing tonight: other people in your community who share your passion for understanding The Universe around us.
